Investigation Says Raleigh Woman Who Shot Robber Did So in Self-Defense
Back on April 26th, a 23-year-old Raleigh woman went through one of the most stressful days a person can. An attempted robbery led to a defensive shooting which then led to the woman herself being investigated. Now authorities are getting the facts straight and this woman’s nightmare may be over.
The woman in question is 23-year-old named Morgen Matthews. On the 26th, Matthews was walking on South Blount Street in downtown Raleigh when a 28-year-old man, Jonathan Peace, attempted to rob Morgen. According to reports, Jonathan pushed Matthews, then proceeded to kick her, pull her hair, and take her phone.
Morgen wasn’t going to let herself be victimized like this though, so she pulled out her concealed handgun, which she had only bought the week prior, and fired a shot into Peace’s chest.
Morgen immediately called authorities, staying with the injured Peace. They arrived a few minutes later to take Peace to the hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
As for Morgen, the stress of this incident was not yet over as she was then put under investigation for her role in the shooting. What seemed like a cut and dry defensive gun use was anything but as local police took until last Wednesday to clear Morgen of any wrongdoing in the incident, even though Morgen was a registered concealed carrier and was legally carrying at the time.
Thankfully, even though it took a while, Morgen is now free to go about her life and put this situation behind her, though she is quite thankful that she bought that gun in the first place, now.
As for Jonathan Peace, he was taken to nearby WakeMed hospital for treatment and then to jail charged with common law robbery and assault on a female. It was Peace’s third arrest this year.
